The FSC Team Selection Process

  • Team Selections are used by the player to demonstrate their intention to play spring soccer and by FSC to evaluate and determine players’ placement on teams. FSC aims to provide a place to play for all players seeking to play. We do not wish to “cut” any players. Instead, we aim to provide a place to play for all and the team selection process is used to best determine where that place will be.
  • Players should pre-register online prior to September 30th.
  • Attendance is an essential component of the team placement process. Players should attend both tryout dates. Players must notify the age group head coach directly by email if they expect to be absent at either tryout date. (Team coaches will be announced and posted online as they are determined.) Attendance is crucial and players should make every effort to attend in order to receive the best opportunity for a full evaluation.
  • The sessions will consist of a dynamic warm up, some skill related drills, and lost of free play games ranging from 4v4 to 11v11. Players will be evaluated by their age group coaches as well as unaffiliated coaches from outside their age group to provide as objective of an evaluation as possible. Input from all coaches present, along with the Director of Coaching, will assist the age group coaches in making their decisions on player placement.
  • Players will receive a phone call from an age group coach within 48 hours after the conclusion of their second tryout date. At the time of the phone call the player and their family should be prepared to answer “yes” or “no” to the team position they’re offered. Families should have this discussion ahead of time and should have any questions ready to ask the coach.
  • At U14 and older it will be customary for the age group coach to ask to talk to the player directly to offer them their position. However, conversation between the parent(s) and coach is appropriate if the parent(s) would like to speak with the coach for any reason. However, the coach will ask the players themselves if they wish to accept the position they’re being offered. The idea behind the coach talking to the player directly is to give the player, whom the whole process is centered around, the opportunity to speak for themselves and accept or decline the position offered. It is not meant to remove the parent from the process, but rather to give the player more of an active role in the process. Again, families should have conversations ahead of time to know what their answer will be or if they have questions they need to have answered.

Evaluation Criteria

Players will be evaluated on the four major components of playing soccer which are:

  • Technique: the ability to control and manipulate the ball (i.e. dribbling, passing, shooting, heading, etc.)
  • Insight: the ability to understand the game, its positions, tactics, and strategies, and to make good decisions while playing.
  • Personality: the ability of a player to positively influence a game through their personality traits (i.e. competitiveness, leadership, tenacity, willingness to take physical risks, offensive prowess, defensive prowess, etc.)
  • Soccer Fitness: the ability of a player to perform the necessary movements and skills required of the game such as speed over a longer distance, quickness over a shorter distance, changing direction, jumping, and demonstrating a good general fitness base.

U13-U19 Team Formation

Montana Youth Soccer Association designates age group leagues as U12, U13, U14, U16, and U18. FSC Will form teams based on these designations.

When there is more than one team in a U13-U19 age group playing ability will be the number one factor in placing players onto teams. FSC intends to form a “Premier” team (Green) to compete in the state Premier League and a “Select” team (White) to compete in the state Select league.

By grouping players by ability there will be more parity within each team. By creating more parity within each of our teams our coaches can do a better job of meeting the developmental needs of each individual player.

FSC will continue to implement combined age group training in which the head coach of a Premier team will periodically train both teams together in his or her age group. The ideas behind this are to instill continuity in training across both teams in an age group, provide opportunity for players on both teams to be seen by the Premier team head coach on an ongoing basis, and to foster greater “clubness” within our teams and players. This combined training will take place at a minimum of two times per month during the season. In addition, the Director of Coaching will run at least one combined training session for each age group during the spring.

U12 Team Formation

Team formation at the U12 age group will consist of player evaluation on Team Placement dates. The intent will be to retain all players and form two teams of even ability. The U12 level is an introduction to travel soccer and should be a bridge year between the Academy “player pool” format and the more competitive format which begins at U13/U14. Every effort will be made to create balanced teams of even ability. Some movement between teams could be possible through the season using the new “Club Pass” which has been introduced by the state, allowing players to more easily participate with more than one team if necessary. U12 head coaches will conduct periodic combined training to maintain continuity between the two teams. The FSC Director of Coaching will conduct at least one of these combined training sessions during the season.

U9-U11 Spring Academy Formation

FSC will once again provide the Spring Academy for U9-U11 players. Players in these ages will not participate in the Team Placement dates. Returning players from previous Academy seasons will be notified of an online registration period and a meeting will be held for families who are new to Academy and are interested in learning more and signing up.
